Market Your Business With Foursquare

foursquare

Foursquare is one of the hottest social networking sites on the planet today, with over 1.5 million users worldwide and could be good for your business.

Foursquare describes themselves as a mobile application that is a cross between a friend-finder, a social city-guide, and a game that encourages users to explore their neighborhoods and rewards them for doing so.

Basically a Foursquare user launches a cell phone app and "checks in" after they arrive at a local business. By checking in, they can tell friends of their location, share tips and earn points. As points accumulate, status badges are earned, with Mayor being the top prize. A person becomes Mayor of a business after checking in the most often in the last 60 days.

So how does this help my business?

The point system encourages visits to your business in a competition for Mayor. These Mayoral candidates frequent your business often and encourage others to become fans as well. And why would they compete to be mayor?

Two words….RE-WARDS. Wouldn't you want to take care of a super loyal customer to encourage them to do more? So you reward them with freebies, discounts or anything else you can think of. Mary's Coffee Shop could give their Mayor a free espresso every week. Or Mikuni Sushi might comp a Kings Roll to their Mayor. You get the idea. Make it as big and fun as you like.

By doing this you are building traffic to your establishment as well as an army of advocates.

How do I begin?

Go to foursquare.com/businesses/ and search for your business, as it may already be listed. If it is, "claim it" and set up your rewards. If it's not listed, you can register it. Foursquare offers many resources for local businesses including window decals to encourage  "check ins".

Foursquare is a brilliant system combining the ubiquitous cell phone, and customers competing to recommend your business. And while not every business type can take advantage of it, Foursquare is a no brainer for many sharp brick and mortar business owners.
